October 1974 Chuck Lillig and Roy Blayney opens one of Kansas Cities finest Mexican Restaraunts in town featuring Chef Lupe. This popular basement hangout was all the rage for the young professionals and culinary experts. Serving over 400 dinners a day and having one of the finest happy hours in town, Blayney's was the talk of the town. Who could forget memorable bartenders such as Jackie Red and Traci.
Roy Blayney moved on 6 months later to open a second location in St Louis and then 5 years later in St. Petersburg Florida. Roy Blayney, now retired resides in Omaha Nebraska and on very special occassions will pop in on his namesake.
After a series of 3 other owners Drummond Cruise, Jim and Lee Elliott in 1982 July 9th to be exact a young 29 year old bartender with already 9 years experience in beverage service, Dick Schulte took the bar over and has never looked back. Having Jim and Lee as his finance guy Dick took over the helm of the bar and cleaned up the bad elements and was instrumental in booking the bands that has brought fans of Westport back for more.
July 9th 1982 was also the first night of the new 3:00 AM closing in which Blayney's had and continues to operate under. The 3 am closing was geared to increase out of town convention trade. What it did was once again make Blayney's the place to be and be scene and to pick up a date. The music scene was so hot with such bands as The Rainmakers, The Crayons and the Foursknns that Dick made a deccission to pull out the kitchen and just serve up HOT, Live Music
The Nace Brothers were just a young band starting out with a drive second to none. They have now become Blayney's #1 band. They will go someplace one of these days and Blayney's is glad they were a big part of its success.
You never know who you might see at Blayney's either performing, working at or just plain having fun. The Moody Blues were once sitting on the deck listening to a great band. Robin Williams was caught telling jokes at a table. Al Jarreau listened all night to a band only to hire the bass player. Kevin Mahogony (International Jazz great) was once the doorman at Blayney's. Other names are to numerous to mention but Dick recalls this guy who wanted to sit in on an open Jam when Dick ask "Are you any good" the man replied "I think so I'm John Fogerty" and he put on a 45 minute show.
23 years later brings us to present. Dick is still here and bought out his partners. Westport has changed a bit but change is good. One thing that does not change is the great LIVE music at Blayney's.
This year Dick built the all new Blayney's Irish Tavern. This finally put a face to Blayney's name. With street visibility, great happy hour, better bathrooms and now great live music upstairs, Dick has done it once again.
Did I mention the summer deck that is 1800sq ft out back of Blayney's in which in the summer months you will be able to hear your favorite music in an outdoor setting onweekends only.
Dick just signed another 10 year lease so with help from all of you and just a little luck, Blayney's will remain the #1 Blues club in Westport.
